My mother is an Irish and her family came over to America decades ago, or maybe I should say centuries ago since the family farm has been ours for almost 200 years and I am a descendent of John Alden and Priscilla Mullen, who came over on the Mayflower.
John Irish, who is my great (x) grandfather Came to Massachusetts in 1629 with the son of Governor Bradford of the Plymouth Colony. He lived in Duxbury, Plymouth Colony, Massachusetts and worked as a land surveyor.
His son John moved to Little Compton, Rhode Island.
My family grew apples, raised sheep, and dairy cattle. They also farmed the land and they moved to many places over the years, settling finally in Michigan.
My grandfather owned a place in Sparta Michigan, not far from the family farm with Apple orchards. My mother was raised on the farm.
I’m a Quilter like my grandmother on my father side and her mother and her mother’s mother and like many of my grandmother’s and great aunts and cousins on my mother side.
So since I am a descendent from the Irish‘s, who raised apples, and had many quilters, I chose my name because it’s unique to me. It has a very deep, personal meaning delving into my family roots.
This was just a brief chapter in my family history, but a piece of my history that I felt inspired to share because it’s what inspired my nom de plume.
